"I have no one to talk to" — what to do tonight, not someday

5 min read · 2 September 2026

If you typed that sentence into a search bar, you already did the hardest part: you admitted it. Most people never get that far. Now let's make the next step small enough to actually take.

Separate the two problems

"No one to talk to" is really two things. One is a long-term question about friendships and community. The other is tonight: a specific thought that needs to leave your head before you can sleep. Trying to solve the first one at midnight is how you end up doom-scrolling until three. Solve the second one.

What tonight needs

  • One person who reads properly and replies like a human.
  • No history with you, so you can say the unedited version.
  • No follow-up tomorrow, no worried texts, no "are you okay?" at work.

That is a very different requirement from friendship, and it is much easier to meet. An anonymous chat with a real person does exactly that job.

Say the real sentence first

Do not warm up. Do not start with "hey, how are you". Start with the thing: "I've been feeling invisible for months and I don't know who to tell." Anonymity removes the cost of saying it, so spend that freedom on honesty.

Then, and only then, the bigger question

Once the pressure is off, the long-term version gets easier to think about. People who practise saying real things to strangers get noticeably better at saying them to people they know. Tonight's conversation is the rehearsal.
